There was a huge response to today’s piece about the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the preface to my interview with Angie Maxwell, a political scientist studying the politics of the south, I said King would have understood that “the line connecting Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump runs through Dixie.” That seems to have struck a chord.
Today’s piece was the free edition of the Editorial Board. Like all the pieces I write, it was outside the paywall. I’m glad to have you on my free list. I wouldn’t want it otherwise. However, I need your help.

That piece was amazing and clarified so much of what has been so confusing. Thanks so much for such insightful work.
