Weekend reads: ICYMI

The president changed the subject with intimations of war.

The Times, the Post and others reported this week a cache of emails between the White House and the Pentagon showing the president understood withholding aid to Ukraine was illegal but ordered it withheld anyway. As that news emerged, Donald Trump was telling guests around his Mar-a-Lago Club something big was coming.

Turns out that something big was an airstrike that killed a top Iranian general in Baghdad. Qassem Soleimani’s assassination is the kind of thing that starts wars, and that’s just what everyone in the news business was talking about by week’s end.

The president had changed the subject using his power to do it.

The Editorial Board is a small but plucky enterprise (in my humble opinion) publishing three free editions every week (five weekly editions in total). But those free editions aren’t really free. They require work. Costly work. It’s work with a cash-value.

This email goes out to everyone who is signed up to receive free editions. I won’t stop informing citizens in the interest of the common good, but I do need your help. Please consider becoming a paying subscriber for a monthly rate of $6 or yearly rate of $60. (Signing up for the year is the same as getting a discount of around 20 percent!)

Below is what you might have missed over the holidays.
