The Supreme Court’s ruling this morning complements today’s edition. I argued that the president telling the truth about the Bible he was holding for last week’s photo op was a mistake. In telling the truth, he was winking at the press, letting reporters in on the joke he’s been having at the expense of white evangelical Christians. In effect, he was confessing that he’s a Christian only to the extend that he plays on on TV. As I was writing, SCOTUS upheld rights for the LGBTQ community, something the white evangelical Christians in Trump’s camp thought was not supposed to happen. If the Bible trick invoked doubt, the high court’s ruling is going to turbocharge paranoia.

There is now a crack in the Trump base that may never go away.
