I’m taking a short vacation

Plus more evidence of Trump's disloyalty.

I never felt such white-hot patriotism as I have felt these nearly four years. That probably doesn’t come as a surprise to anyone reading the Editorial Board. But it’s getting white-hotter in the wake of news that the Russians planned to pay terrorists in Asia to kill Americans GIs, and that the president has known for months only to do nothing. Worse, during this same period, he gassed Americans out of the way to have a photo of himself taken with a Bible he does not own in front of a church he does not attend. I keep wondering how many injuries we can endure before the country blows up. I keep wondering if enough Americans understand this president’s disloyalty.

OK, enough of that (for now). I’m writing to let you know that I’m taking a little summer vacation. Just three days but a badly needed three days of self-care. The next full essay will arrive in your inboxes around lunchtime on Thursday, July 2. I’ll write another full essay for Friday, July 3, before signing off for the holiday weekend.

I won’t write full essays but I might (might) send little notes and thoughts and threads, just because I can’t help myself and because there’s so much to talk about. Trust me when I say that kind of thing isn’t work so much as another kind of self-care. In the meantime, now would be a good time to subscribe to the Editorial Board if you have not already, but if you have, now would be a good time for leaving a tip. Think of it as mad money for our brief, frugal and exotic holiday Mystic, Connecticut!

Thank you, as always, for your support of the Editorial Board!

Thank you for your insightful, well-reasoned essays. I don’t recognize the country in which I live. From Rachel Maddow’s reporting, Russia didn’t simply ‘plan’ to pay for assassinations of American servicemen, a number of payments were actually made, which means that US soldiers were killed. Trump knew, did nothing, and stood before young West Point graduates who he is willing to sacrifice to gain Putin’s approval. Independent chroniclers of this madness are one of the last remaining guardrails of our democracy. Enjoy your well-earned holiday.
