Update on my health insurance situation

Update on my health insurance situation

On Labor Day Weekend last year, I set out to find 100 new subscribers. You probably saw all the messages. The goal was to make up the difference that I anticipated facing once my health insurance premiums doubled the following December.

It’s been some time since that effort ended. I owe you an update.

I didn’t quite reach my goal. More than 70 people subscribed. Many others sent tips, some of them very generous. That’s the good news.

The bad news is that I lost about the same number of subscribers over those four months. (This is totally normal in the publishing business. We call it “churn.”) Meanwhile, my insurance premiums doubled.

Well, I couldn’t afford it. Fortunately, I am in good health. I don’t have chronic conditions. My doctor says I can pay for visits in cash.

That’s where things stand.

The goal now is to keep doing what I do: telling the truth as clearly as I can in plain English for normal people and the common good.

I want to be in the best financial position I can be for when the political winds change, whenever that is, and I can once again afford to buy health insurance through Connecticut’s Obamacare exchange.

To everyone who has subscribed since August, I want to say thank you! (That goes for all my subscribers going back to the beginning!) To everyone who has sent a tip, I am so grateful for you, too!

There is goodness in this world, good people. It’s a shame to forget that.

Or if you would rather leave a tip, here’s the link for that, too.

PS: If you're wondering why I chose the above sketch of Lorenzo Medici by ER Stoehr, here's why: I couldn't think of a better way of illustrating this message. Anyway, it's good! I love sharing her art. She's working so hard on her drawing!
