It’s hard to believe, but I started the Editorial Board when I was 44 years old. The world was different back then. There was no covid pandemic. There was no insurrection. There was no reelection of a criminal who told us he would put America first.
Despite the hardship, there is a fighting spirit rising up. As Greg Sargent said this morning, a year ago, it looked like Donald Trump was insurmountable on the economy, immigration and national security. Now he’s thrown all three advantages into the teeth of the resistance against him. He may be a good liar and propagandist, but he’s a terrible politician.
It’s going to take more than defeating Trump and the Republicans to bring real and lasting progress to the United States. Aspects of authoritarianism were a feature of our politics before him. They will be after him. That’s why I do what I’m doing here at the Editorial Board, speaking as clearly as I can in plain English for the sake of the common good.
Today, as I am turning 52, I’m thinking about the community that has sprung up around this little enterprise. It has been the most rewarding and humbling experience of my public life. This gathering of like minds has supported me through it all. And I have learned so much! From where I’m standing now, my 44-year-old self seems too young to start a newsletter!
That said, times are harder than they were. Eight years ago, I could afford health insurance. I bought it through Connecticut’s Obamacare exchange. As many of you know, I can’t do that anymore due to the indifference of Trump and the GOP. They really don’t care about normal people and our struggles. They care about ballrooms, tax cuts and bombing poor countries.
